In the summer of 2006, guitarist, Camilo Nu, and filmmaker, Reed Rickert, met each other for the first time in the small but potent arts and music community of Essaouira, Morocco. Camilo had set out to Morocco to begin a new roots-fusion music album inviting Moroccan musicians. Reed had just finished a documentary series on the traditional music of Morocco for Listen For Life. They both were drawn to Essaouira for the Festival of Gnawa and World Music and to learn more about this trance music of the Saharan gnawis. The fateful meeting led to the conception of The Third Root - Morocco Documentary and production began shortly after as they toured throughout Morocco to encounter its many music styles.
